loyalty not appreciated

My mobile phone contract was dued in March. In theory, I could have upgrade or cancel my contract in February, but I didn’t because I was waiting for Nokia N91 and wanted to get a better deal.

I rang up my service provider, o2, in early March and see what they could offer me. They offered me £15 off my monthly tariff to £20, and a free Nokia N91 or N90, there was only one problem, N91 only available in UK late March early April and the release date of N90 was still unknown yet. I didn’t mind waiting for another few weeks.

Then I rang up o2 again last weekends, because the later I pick up the new contract, the more benefits I lose. And I was told that the N91 will be released in May, though not confirmed. I wasn’t very happy and unwilling to wait till May to get the new contract, so I decided to change to another phone, Nokia 9300i.

It will be my third sequence year with o2 if I sign up the contract, I thought my loyalty will be paid off by getting a free phone, but hell not, I was told to pay £200 for the phone! I always think paying so much for a phone in this country is a silly thing to do, why on earth do I have to pay where I could get it free elsewhere?

I decided to terminate this contract, which means I will be changing my number, the last thing I ever want to do.

I went out to Vodafone to see if I could get a deal. £100 for Nokia 9300, 18 months £35 monthly tariff with 9 months half price rental and a free bluetooth headset. Still expensive (Nokia 9000 series are one of the most expensive phones on sale) but not a bad deal. I only realized it was without the i until I reach home, I didn’t want that and brought the phone back for exchange, and the sales advisor wasn’t happy (he could make a few pounds more by selling expensive phones) and trying to persuade me to stay with 9300, saying the only extra that come with i is the WiFi (duhh, I’ve done my research and know what I want ok!) and there’s no way I could get 9300i in this country. (he thought that I was ignorant foreigner).

Finally, I got this deal from phones4u; a free Nokia 9300i, 12 months £45 monthly tariff, first 3 months double minutes and texts, plus, I could downgrade my tariff after 6 months.

Ironically, the phones4u store is just next to Vodafone’s. No way to get a Nokia 9300i in this country???? Hello? Wanna look at what’ve I got 10 feets further?

UPDATE: 22 April 2006

Phone dropped to solid ground, scratched the surface but still functioning. Damn!
